February’s Book of the Month Summary

I already know what you’re thinking! I have really posted this one late but life gets busy and that’s my only excuse. So thank you for bearing with me and here is my summary of February’s book of the month!

How to Win Friends and Influence People

by: Dale Carnegie

This book is a lot older than January’s book of the month but I’ve read it before and it had a lot of knowledge that could be translated into the digital age of Instagram, blogging, networking, that we all do. So while reading the summary, think about it in terms of how you can utilize these points and put them into practice with your online friends!

Techniques in Handling People

  1. Don’t criticize, condemn or complain.
  2. Give honest and sincere appreciation.
  3. Arouse in the other person an eager want.

Six ways to make people like you:

  1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
  2. Smile.
  3. Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
  4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
  5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interests.
  6. Make the other person feel important – and do it sincerely.

Win people to your way of thinking:

  1. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it.
  2. Show respect for the other person’s opinions. Never say, “You’re wrong.”
  3. If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.
  4. Begin in a friendly way.
  5. Get the other person saying “yes, yes” immediately.
  6. Let the other person do a great deal of the talking.
  7. Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers.
  8. Try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view.
  9. Be sympathetic with the other person’s ideas and desires.
  10. Appeal to the nobler motives.
  11. Dramatize your ideas.
  12. Throw down a challenge.

Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment

  1. Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
  2. Call attention to people’s mistakes indirectly.
  3. Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
  4. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
  5. Let the other person save face.
  6. Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be “hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise.”
  7. Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.
  8. Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct.
  9. Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.

Here are a couple of my favorite quotes from the book:

Regarding influence:

“[T]he only way on earth to influence other people is to talk about what they want and to show them how to get it.”

Regarding success:

“If there are any secrets of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own.”

I know with this posted late that it means you don’t have a ton of time for March’s book of the month to follow along but I’m going to announce it soon on my story. I chose a short one for this reason! I’m excited to hear your thoughts on this book!

Microblading 101

Do you fill in your eyebrows? If so, this post is for you. You may know by watching my Instagram stories that I am obsessed with my eyebrows always looking on point. I’ve shaved, waxed, threaded, you name it! Naturally, I was intrigued by microblading.

Eyebrows are sacred, beautiful little hairs that shape your face so I was afraid to let someone do something to my face that would last a while. As soon as I went in for my appointment, I knew I was in the best of hands with Rita with Beauty Marked Brows. She takes the time to listen to what you’re looking for and lets you check-in every step of the way.

Measuring the actual shape of the brow and the color were really important to me! I typically fill in my brows with a grey eyeshadow (more common for blondes). With a legit measuring tool, she mapped out what would be best for my brows. Here is a picture of my eyebrows mapped out when I was happy with their shape, super cute.

What is microblading?

It’s a cosmetic procedure that creates a semipermanet tattoo done manually (not by machine) by putting pigment underneath the skin. This is done by using a tool made of tiny needles clustered together to mimic a blade.

How do you prep for your appointment?

Before your microblading appointment, you want to try to avoid the following as best you can:
• Do not drink coffee, alcohol or energizing drinks on the day of treatment.
• Do not take Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E or Ibuprofen 24 hours before treatment.
• Do not take omega3 (fish oil) 1 week before treatment.
• Do not tan or have intense sun exposure 3 days before treatment.
• No waxing 2-3 days before treatment.
• No chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser or any other intense treatments 2 weeks before treatment.
• Shower and fix your hair as you need to take extra care not to get your brows wet for several days.

Does it hurt?

This was my heavily Googled question before I went into get my eyebrows done. Before the procedure, Rita put numbing cream on the area and allowed enough time to make sure it kicked in. She also added more when we switched eyebrows. I have a pretty high pain tolerance so it didn’t hurt; it was just uncomfortable. There’s this really odd scraping noise you can hear and you know it’s your skin, so that’s a bit cringey.

What does it look like right after?

My eyebrows appeared as if I filled them in a bit darker than I normally do and obviously a bit red. Brad said I looked like Frida Kahlo minus the unibrow part because they were darker than usual. Rita was so funny because she said that I’d go through some emotions with my brows as they healed. Here is the funny chart she gave me with Kimoji’s!

How was your healing process?

It took about a full week for my brows to go through the healing process. They were dark for the first three days, scabbed for the next three days, and then they came around. I had to slather on tons of Aquaphor to keep them moisturized (I have very dry skin and I was in the mountains). You can’t exercise or jacuzzi which was a great excuse for me to be lazy so my brows didn’t get infected. All in all the healing process is super easy, just make sure you’re keeping them hydrated!

Does it damage your skin?

Microblading is created by scraping the pigment into the skin which may cause scar tissue to form when healing, but is not visible on the surface of the skin. If you are prone to Keloids, then microblading is not recommended.

How long does it last?

Depending on your skin type, the pigment will slowly fade over 18-24 months. Oily skin tends to fade the pigment faster so is not as good of a candidate for microblading.

How many touch-ups are needed within the year of having microblading done?

You’ll get one free touch-up 4-6 weeks after your initial appointment. Your next touch-up is usually sometime after 18 months, again depending on how well your aftercare routine is.

Can you wax or thread your eyebrows after microblading?

Once your brows are healed, you can continue to wax or thread them as you need.

How do I book an appointment?

If someone would like to book an appointment with Rita, the best way is through text at (951) 236-4767. You can also book on her website at www.beautymarkedbrows.com!

Meet My Squad- @hailie.lane

Name: Hailie Lane

Birthday: 05/04/1993
Hometown: Lake George, NY
Currently Located: San Diego, CA
Hailie and I have a unique story of meeting! We were friends via Instagram and we had never met. We both work 9-5’s and I posted a photo on my story of the Christmas tree in my building. Hailie knew where it was and we met up for coffee on our lunch break because she literally works across the street! What I love most about this girlie is that she’s real and genuine. She’s always the life of the party even if she has to wake up early the next morning for a workout. Hailie gives 100% into everything and I love her for it!
When/Why did you decide to become an influencer?
I was in college and for one of my assignments was the create a blog and  I was talking to my friends and they convinced me to actually do it for real. I’ve always had a huge love for fashion so I kind of took that assignment and turned into what I have today!
What is your favorite part of being an influencer?
My favorite part would be when people tell me that they bought this because of me or something I said helped them personally. When you can personally impact whether its 5 people or 5000 it’s one of the greatest feelings.
What are some unexpected downsides to being an influencer?
You are constantly being judged. More from your personal friends too, mainly because they don’t understand it. You are constantly working. It never stops if you want to grow you have to do it yourself and keep going, there are no downtimes in social media.
I don’t think people realize how much work you have to put into it. It’s just not taking a pretty picture. I could probably list more!
What three accounts on Instagram do you follow that inspire you?
https://www.instagram.com/haileebobailee/  Her personality and no f**ks attitude is what inspires me. She is always herself!
https://www.instagram.com/marianna_hewitt/  I mean come on, this girl is all grace and style.
https://www.instagram.com/emilyrosehannon/  HAIR GOALS. She is just perfection!
How do you deal with comparison on Instagram?
At first, it was really hard being like why does this person get more likes or followers than me. My content is just as good, but to be honest, you just need to stop giving a fuck and when I stopped worrying and I started being more of myself that is when everything changed for me.
How do you balance your job, personal life, and being an influencer?
I am actually writing a blog post about this soon! But it is for sure hard, long story short I have to dedicate specific time to people and things that are most important to me. I have lost a lot of opportunities but it all comes down to what matters to you most.
What are three brands that would be your dream partnerships?
Revolve is like one of my major goals! Free People for sure but I don’t think they do any collabs. If I could also get any huge designer like Gucci or something luxury I think I would die.
What piece of advice would you give yourself when you started to become an influencer?
STOP GIVING A F**K WHAT PEOPLE THINK. I am so mad at myself for caring for the longest time what people thought about me. I would probably be in a different place right now if I stopped earlier.
What is the craziest fashion trend you’re into right now?
Underboob all the way.

Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice

Real talk here: lingerie can be tricky to purchase. There are so many thoughts that run through your head. Does this make me feel confident? Will my significant other like it? What lingerie can I wear that doesn’t make me look like a dominatrix? What if I want to look like a dominatrix? How do I even get into this thing? Well, I’m here to help. Lingerie shopping shouldn’t be this crazy venture, it simply comes down to your style and what you feel confident in. I’ve created a quiz to pair you with the perfect lingerie option: are you sugar, spice, or everything nice?
1. What is your ideal Valentine’s Day date?
a. Stay at home and order take-out

2. What are your color preferences?
a. Pinks, ivory, whites
b. Jewel tones
c. Burgundy, black
3. Out of these songs, which is your favorite?

If you’re mostly A’s, you’re sugar! You’re super sweet, generous, and real. You love the comfortable things in life like lounging at home with your sweetie. My best bet for you is lingerie that can also be worn as lounge wear. Being comfy and cute is your favorite! This robe from Yandy in their Sugar Femme collection is a great option for you. The material is so silky and the light pink color is super fun.
If you’re mostly B’s, you’re nice! Always funny, happy-go-lucky, and a people person, you love to shine bright. You enjoy comedy stores, intimate nights out, and watching the newest shows on Netflix. Your best friend in the lingerie section would be a ruffled camisole with matching flowy, but skimpy, shorts. This berry colored pajama set is sexy without being over the top. You can find this option in Yandy’s Girl Crush collection!
If you’re mostly C’s, you’re spice! You’re a bad bitch and you know it! You walk into a room and just your presence demands heads to turn in your direction. You’re always bold in your actions which means you need lingerie to match. Dark lace and dark colors mixed with the tiniest outfit to impress and stun any viewer is the best option for you. In Yandy’s Bad BITCH section, you can find this perfect number.

Blog: www.shestyledwhat.com
Birthday: 3/08/1996
Hometown: San Diego, CA
Currently Located: San Diego, CA

Danielle and I met before an event and the rest is history! Immediately I knew we’d be good friends because she’s so sweet and approachable. We’re both really petite so I love watching her style things that actually work for our figures. Give her a potato sack and she’ll make it chic!

When/Why did you decide to become an influencer?
Around 2 years ago I was a naive fashion obsessed college student who wanted to start a blog to showcase and express my style. I say naive because I didn’t know anyone who was an “influencer” or even had a blog and I thought I was one of the few people with a fashion blog (LOL). Looking back at this I would have never imagined how BIG the fashion community actually is. I started my blog because my college town was basically in the middle of nowhere, I had so many clothes and no where to wear them to. Showcasing them all on my Instagram was so fun for me, I had so much bottled up creative energy and so my blog followed shortly after. The rest is history! It was the best decision I’ve ever made.

What is your favorite part of being an influencer?
I really love being a source of inspiration for others. Especially with fashion, it’s an art to me and I love putting my photos and thoughts out there. My favorite part is when people tell me that I’ve inspired an outfit of theirs, a store that they shop at, an item of clothing they bought, or their style in general. I also absolutely love meeting new girls and new friends who share the same passions as me. It’s so cool surrounding yourself with so many creative and inspiring people online and in person.

What are some unexpected downsides to being an influencer?
It may look like a breeze on the outside when you see perfectly curated content but it’s a LOT of work, time and stress. I definitely stress myself out if I haven’t posted in a few days or if I didn’t get the “perfect shot”. I have to bring myself back down to earth sometimes and remember that not everything has to be perfect. Another downside is how often I’m on my phone.

What three accounts on Instagram do you follow that inspire you?
Right now I would say @songofstyle @tezza and @thestyledseed. I love how unique their photos and styles are!

Besides Instagram, how do you get inspired?
This may be a weird answer but I get a ton of inspiration going to LA. I have a huge appreciation for LA and I feel so alive when I’m there. I find a ton of inspiration just by the people there and what random people on the street are wearing. I also get inspired by the people I surround myself with. I love being surrounding by people who are passionate about their own things. Two of my best friends are a singer and a film maker. We’re all chasing our dreams and it definitely keeps me inspired being around them.

What fashion designer brands inspire you?
Chanel and Louis Vuitton. They all have such consistent brands and styles that they carry through their shows and their lines. I always look forward to watching their fashion shows and I think it’s SO cool how much power and influence they hold in the fashion world.

What piece of advice would you give someone who wanted to become an influencer?
I would say don’t become an influencer to become an influencer, you have to be passionate about something for others to be influenced by you. Follow what makes you unique to yourself and share that with everyone. For me, it’s my style. Also, I would make sure to say that it’s not by any means easy – it’s really like a full time job and it takes a LOT of time and patience.

You recently rebranded your Instagram & blog, congrats! What sparked this?
I’m so excited about my rebrand! I wrote a blog post about it here.
But long story short, I really wanted a change in my Instagram and blog. I knew I was capable of something bigger and better and then the name “she styled what” popped into my head a couple months ago and that was it- I knew that was the change I was looking for. This rebranding really fit with my vision for myself, my brand, and where I’m transitioning my content into. I’m going to incorporate more video content into my Instagram and blog showing how I style pieces, hence the name “she styled what”! I can’t wait to show you more.

What’s something people wouldn’t know about you just based off of your Instagram?
I work a full time job 9-5 in digital marketing! I work super hard on the weekends to get all my content for the week. My boyfriend also takes all of my photos and I am so thankful of how supportive he is and excited to help!

Meet My Squad- @fashionablysurfed

Name: Allysa Larson
Instagram: @fashionablysurfed
Birthday: 12/24/1993
Hometown: Gilbert, Arizona
Currently Located: San Diego, CA
Allysa and I met last year through Hailie when we decided to all meet up before an event and go together. That was actually the first time Allysa, Hailie, Danielle, and I were all together for the first time! Literally when I met her I was blown away by how more beautiful she is in person. She genuinely wants to connect with her followers which is something I really appreciate and love. If you all don’t know she has a German Shepard named Dexter who I’m obsessed with. Honestly, this girl works so hard and it shows. Her growth is skyrocketing and I’m not seeing a limit anytime soon. She’s also starting her very own business (YES BOSS BABE)! So I interviewed her on the ups and downs of being an influencer, goals for 2019, and fashion inspiration.
When/Why did you decide to become an influencer?
I decided to become an influence the summer of 2018. I have always loved fashion & had a ton of friends always asking about my style and where I buy my clothes. I figured why not start this as a side hustle / hobby and see where it goes! Almost a year later and I cannot believe all the experiences I’ve had and all the friendships I’ve made. I’m so happy I decided to join this community.
What is your favorite part of being an influencer?
My favorite part about being an influencer is constantly meeting new people and building relationships with people who have similar interests. I’ve met some of my now best friends through this community and it’s been less than a year! I love helping others be successful too so my DMs are always open if you have questions!
What are some unexpected downsides to being an influencer?
The judgement you get from people not in the industry. They simply don’t understand all the hard work that goes into it. It’s more than just wearing pretty clothes & taking pretty pictures. It’s location scouting, content creation, editing, photography, business development and so much more.
What three accounts on Instagram do you follow that inspire you?
How do you deal with creative roadblocks?
I take a break or look at other outlets for inspiration. Pinterest is my go to. It never lets me down. And it’s ok to take a break sometimes. Our brains need to refresh!
What is your major 2019 influencer goal?
I have so many goals for myself so I’ll list a few:
-influence / inspire my audience by creating content that they can relate too
-Reach 50k by the end of 2019
-Make enough money to support myself full time
-Post to my blog more consistently
What are you trend predictions for Spring/Summer 2019?
BRIGHT colors
What currently your favorite trend?
– mom jeans
– puffy sleeves
– Layered gold jewelry
Who are your fashion icons?
Kate Moss, Olivia Palermo, Blake Lively, Chrissy Teigen
Anything extra you want to add?
I am starting my own hair accessory company Summer Buns! Stay tuned for updates – Should be launching in March!

January’s Book of the Month Summary

Influencer: Building Your Personal Brand in the Age of Social Media

By Brittany Hennessy

I wanted to start off my book of the monthly book reviews with one I’ve been wanting to read for a while but never took the plunge. There was something about reading a book on influencing that was intriguing but a part of me felt as if it felt like a scam. What can a book on influencing tell me things that I haven’t learned before? Well, was I surprised when every single page had influencer gold on it. If you want to take blogging and influencing seriously, this book should be your Bible.

Here’s a little background on why Brittany Hennessy is a genius on this subject. She is currently the Vice-President at Carbon, which is an online platform that connects content creators with luxury brands, hotels, and experiences around the world. Brittany was most well-known as Hearst Magazines Digital Media’s Senior Director of Influencer Strategy & Talent Partnerships. Basically, she knows what she’s talking about and is such a boss babe.

Inside the book you’ll find tips on:

  • Using hashtags effectively
  • Writing the perfect bio
  • Creating content people will want to engage with
  • Understanding FTC rules
  • Praising brands without alienating their competitors
  • Building an audience and keeping them engaged
  • Packaging your brand and pitching your favorite companies
  • Monetizing your influence and knowing how much to charge
  • Laying out your blog in an easy to navigate way for brands & agencies
  • Landing an agent
  • Tips and insights from huge content creators

What I found most helpful was:

  1. Laying out your blog to include a “partnership” page
  2. Pitching brands effectively and giving them all the tools to say yes; this means you have to make your media kit/one sheet to send over and keep it updated
  3. Landing an agent if I ever decide to go that route; I honestly haven’t even thought about this option!

I don’t want to summarize each section because the book does it perfectly. So I know I’m ending this review on a major teaser but it’s because I love you and need you to actually read this book. So whether you’re starting from scratch or you’re well into your career as a content creator, I think this book would be extremely helpful! If you end up reading it please reach out to me; I’d love to chat about it!

2019 Goals

Everyone and their mother loves to talk about new year “resolutions” but I don’t like that word. Why should I feel the need to resolve something? Maybe it’s just me but there is a bad vibe around that word. With that being said, I’d love to share my 2019 goals with you all!

I very much believe in the power of attraction. If you speak something into existence then it’s (more) likely to come your way! Yes, it sounds cheesy but it puts you into the right head space to work towards whatever you may want. So write it down, say it out loud, and get working on them!

  1. I’d LOVE to make a book club that reads a book a month and chats about their thoughts. Seriously- if any of you would like to do this please let me know! Slide in the DM’s or email me!
  2. This one I put on my list every year so I’ve been getting better at it- drink more water. It’s easy but it’s had a great impact on my overall health and especially my skin.
  3. I’d like to allow myself to be more vulnerable. This is one of the reasons I even started a blog.
  4. Connect with my followers and do a meet and greet for the San Diego bloggers!
  5. Create very original and creative content. This year I really want to push my creative boundaries!
  6. Respond faster to texts, emails, and DM’s. I’m so sorry that I’m not the best at this! I’m really going to work harder to get back to you all ASAP!
  7. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Some nights after a hot shower I’m just too tired to slap on some lotion. The truth is my skin is naturally dry so I need it!
  8. Collaborate with more amazing brands!
  9. Love where I’m at in life and truly enjoy moments, even if I’m on the couch ignoring my laundry.

Cheers to 2019 and all the amazing moments to come!
